Letter From the EditorS
Dear Readers,
Hello! Nicolina, Sarah, and Amanda here, the Glassworks Spring 2017 interns. Having been a part of this issue from start to finish, we are oh so excited to announce the release of the Glassworks Fall 2017 issue. Like proud parents, we release it unto the world to do and see great things!
Without a doubt, our time at Glassworks will go down as one of our favorite memories from our days at Rowan University. We are thrilled to have our names stamped under the Associate Editor column of Glassworks Issues 14 and 15, plus the Glassworks Apprentice Issue 3.
To say we learned a lot would be the understatement of the year. We all came into this internship with a basic understanding of the editing world and a pretty good idea about determining good pieces for publication, but we leave as polished editors, proficient in the art of selecting submissions to be published and experts on social media promotion. Between long nights up reading submissions, last minute projects, and racing deadlines, we went from writing students to full-blown editors, ready for whatever our Editor in Chief threw at us. And trust us, we loved every minute of it.

Probably the most rewarding activity that we took part in during our time with Glassworks last spring was putting together the third ever Apprentice issue. We worked with students from Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, New Jersey to help them cultivate interesting and insightful pieces of fiction, poetry, and artwork that were then featured in a print issue, much like our biannual Glassworks issues. Helping those young writers realize their talents was such a wonderful experience.
If we talked about all of the opportunities that our time at Glassworks has afforded each of us, we could go on for pages. Whether it was attending the AWP conference in Washington D.C. this past winter to represent the magazine, or networking with up and coming writers at our reading events, we all gained new understandings of the literary world and what it means to be an editor.

Before you go, check out some of our favorite pieces we interns handpicked for Issue 15:
- Welcoming the Fall season on page 40 is Nicolina’s favorite poem in this issue, “Jack O’Lanterns in a Row” by William Orem.
- Sarah’s favorites in the issue are “August” by Lynn Pattison on page 4, and the artwork “Metamorphosis No. 9 (Detail)” by Thomas Terceira on page 12.
- Amanda says to check out pages 26-27 for Kathryn Howd Machan’s fairy-tale inspired poems.
Lastly, we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to give back to the university that has further cultivated our love for literature and contribute to something we really believe is meaningful and important. Thank you to our Editor-in-Chief, Katie Budris, our Managing Editor, Andrew Davison, and the rest of the Glassworks staff we’ve had the chance to work with for all of the great memories.
Happy Reading! Nicolina Givin, Sarah Knapp, and Amanda Rennie |
